Strengths-Based Coaching: The Art of Appreciative Inquiry
The act of singing is always a gift, no matter who or where it comes from. It can also be a very personal, and therefore vulnerable experience, that coaches everywhere have a responsibility to nurture and protect. This class represents an attempt to remodel the traditional coaching paradigm and turn it on its head by emphasizing two skills: 1) learning to identify what is working well within a performance, and 2) finding creative ways to enhance those qualities (or further draw them out) by asking for what we do want, rather than discouraging what we don’t want.

HCNW MIXED CHORUS, first rehearsal
Where you can laugh and learn with your friends over THREE sessions? Rich Lapp will be leading three sessions to prepare our HCNW MIXED CHORUS to sing on the Saturday Night Show. Session one will start with sectionals with section leaders. Sessions two and three we will have full group rehearsals with break out duets. Because one of these sessions MAY conflict with a class you really want to take at HCNW, we understand if you need to miss one of our sessions. No worries. This style of class is perfect for music teams and directors to see new ways of leading rehearsals. Our sessions will use one SATB chart (Can You Feel the Love Tonight, arr/June Dale) with accurate and quality learning media. Because we have multiple sessions to craft this song, we can hone this barbershop classic for the show and really make something special! We invite everyone to join in the fun and sing with your friends!

Director's Workshop
All current and aspiring directors are welcome in this hands on class! All students will be conducting in short 2-3 minute bursts as we go around the room on each skill, then the next person will try as well.  We will use polecats to sing to practice your guestures! We will work on...
  • Preperation before we sing
  • Your face/body/energy
  • The table
  • Ictus
  • Melding
  • Group entrance on 1, 2, 3, or 4
  • Face-body-breath-cue
  • "Go away" circle
  • "I invite you" circle
  • Larnge group cut off
  • Section entrance
  • Section cut off
  • Closing on singable consonants
  • Problem spots for us all
Conducting is very personal and has the opportunity for variety.  However, it has to work with the ensemble you have, not the ensemble in your mind.

HCNW MIXED CHORUS, second rehearsal
Here's the link to the sheet music and your learning tracks!!!

Sing in the Barbershop Style
There are a thousand things you can do with a song; come learn the critical things you have to do in order for the song to be barbershop. If you don’t use these five, you cannot succeed in singing barbershop. We will also explore a second Ah Hah and trap -- just because a chart is written in the barbershop style, it doesn’t mean that you are singing it in the barbershop style. This class will help you understand what barbershop is, and how to use your new understanding of the barbershop style to move from being a "notes and words" singer to a singer who gives the barbershop song its due. This class is for everyone from novices to experts.

From (A)nxious to (Z)esty
Most of us are familiar with the so-called basic emotions: happy, sad, surprise, anger, fear, disgust. Beyond that, it’s easy to start drawing blanks. In this course, we will take a deep dive into the emotional landscape of the human heart, pulling at the threads of this great tapestry we call the human experience. What’s the difference between, say, irritation and frustration, why does it matter, and how could this kind of discernment help you become a better performer? These questions and more will be explored in this interactive, introductory course, open to everyone.

HCNW MIXED CHORUS, third rehearsal

Social Harmony 101: Compassionate Communication for Singers
Have you ever found yourself turned off from singing because of social or interpersonal grievances? Do you struggle to feel seen and heard by the other members of your ensemble, leadership team, or even your audience? NVC can help! In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of Nonviolent Communication (sometimes called Compassionate Communication) as it was envisioned and developed by its founder, Marshall Rosenberg, in his seminal book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. A chorus or quartet culture firmly rooted in the principles of this model is sure to provide a transformative and powerful experience for everyone involved. At the end of this crash course, students (that’s you!) will have learned and demonstrated the following skills using NVC, as it relates to both our musical and personal lives: 1) How to identify the root cause of emotions and how these affect our behavior; 2) How to celebrate successes, express gratitude, and receive praise in a more meaningful and authentic way; 3) How to communicate using a step-by-step method designed to eliminate conflict and increase connection between yourself and others; 4) How to find mutually satisfying solutions to interpersonal problems that meet everyone’s needs; And so much more!

What if you could capture video of all of your rehearsals? Northwest Sound has been recording weekly rehearsals since 2017 and it has had enormous impact – from member retention (being able to catch up on days when absent) to sectional growth (being able to review teachable moments from rehearsals) to choreography and individual engagement. In this session, we will go over everything you need to get going – including the hardware (approximately $300), software (free), and end-to-end workflow (10-15 minutes per rehearsal) that makes of this all possible.

What's the BIG IDEA?
It’s pretty common knowledge that every chapter wants to grow and sing at higher levels, but how do you get there?  You’d need proven effective concepts that are brought to you in easily digestible modules that are shared by experienced coaches and then that coaching should be ongoing (like 2 times a month for even 45 minutes). Over the last 8 months, the Boundless Initiative of Growth - the BIG IDEA Series has combined video classes with live discussions on a regular basis with people from across the country - as a beta-test of "what's possible?' This class will cover the high-points learned from the series, and give your chapter a chance to participate with Paul this year. If your chapter wants to grow (or needs to grow) then this class is a "must attend" for as many of your members as possible.

Body, Breath, Movement and Meaning
The journey toward connected, authentic performance starts with freeing the body and the breath. This sets us up for vocal ease and success but also for clear, present communication onstage. From there we connect to movement and text, engaging our imagination for performances that feel believable and fresh every time. This class includes some gentle floorwork for releasing physical tension. You will need to bring a YOGA MAT and a memorized chunk of a song you'd like to sing. Dress in clothes you can comfortably move in.

Fundamentals of Swing for the Vocalist
Barbershop singers are world class at locking chords, but we often struggle with swing.

We will introduce swing concepts using a few simple songs. We will sing in unison to feel the difference of even 8th notes and swung 8th notes.
If you have a particular song you wish to get some help on, we can workshop this as a class.

We will cover
  • subdivision of 2 vs 3 inside quarter notes
  • 2 & 4 vs 1 & 3
  • Jazz performance practice of "&" energy
  • Smoothing out the 8th note runs
  • Using rests as a rhythmic element
  • Using drum loops instead of metronomes
  • Using diphongs as a rhythmic element
  • Swing vs Shuffle
I'm excited to work together!
